LITTLEDEAN JAIL, the Alcatraz of the Forest of Dean, where good and evil await you. A building of many uses, a former House of Correction, police station and courthouse, even a film set, is reputed to be one of the country’s most haunted historic Victorian buildings. Standing at the gateway to the Forest of Dean and behind a formidable sandstone facade Littledean Jail was built by in 1788 the pioneer of prison reform Sir George Onesiphorous Paul, and leading architect of his day William Blackburn who died suddenly before the project was completed. Does his ghost walk the cell lined corridors? The Grade II listed building was in its time revolutionary as a House of Correction and became a role model for correctional facilities in London and Philadelphia in the USA.
Children as young as 8 years of age were incarcerated, tortured by thrashing and whipping and kept in solitary confinement here, 3 babies were born though only 1 survived.

Ellen Hayward the last women to be accused of witchcraft in Britain was tried at Littledean, she defended herself and was found not guilty – on a clear dark night Old Ellen may be heard shrieking with laughter at the carryings on at Littlean Jail, her tombstone can be found at the local church in nearby Cinderford.
